Fire engulfs thousands of tyres Fire engulfs thousands of tyres
(about 2 hours later)
Part of a Nottinghamshire town has been closed off due to a fire involving up to 400,000 tyres. Fire crews from across Nottinghamshire were called to deal with a blaze involving around 400,000 tyres at a site near Mansfield on Friday night.
The blaze broke out at the Warsop Tyre company in Oakfield Lane, Warsop, on Friday night. Part of the town of Warsop was closed off as flames engulfed the tyres at the Warsop Tyre company on Oakfield Lane.
Thick acrid smoke could be seen for several miles and people in Warsop and nearby villages have been advised to keep doors and windows closed. Thick acrid smoke was seen for several miles and people living nearby were told to keep doors and windows closed.
A number of roads have been closed off because water is being pumped through pipes from the River Maun. John Sentence who lives near the scene said thick black smoke was "pumping out" of the site.
A Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said the fire was under control and three crews remained at the scene. Mr Sentence said: "Last night the smoke was really black, but this morning [Saturday] it's like a grey smoke coming over.
"Just a little further up from where we are, you can see it really pumping out.
"There's a big water pipe the fire crews have put down during the night, it's blocking the route for traffic."
'Major disruption'
A Nottinghamshire Police spokesman said: "It's a considerable fire.
"It's not one that's caused any injuries but, because of its nature, it's going to take Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service some time to tackle it and it's leading to major disruption today and possibly tomorrow.
"Unfortunately those [water] pipes cannot be driven over when in use, so Warsop centre is going to be effectively closed."
The pressure of the pipe will be relaxed every hour on the hour, for 15 minutes, to allow people to travel to and from their homes, he said.
A Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said it was not yet known how the fire started.
