Drivers returning home after the bank holiday faced long delays on the M25 after two bulls and a heifer escaped from an overturned horsebox.

Emergency services closed the M25 between junctions five and six on the Kent/Surrey border after the accident at 1945 BST on Monday.

The two bulls bolted into nearby fields but the heifer wandered across all six lanes before she was sedated by vets.

The motorway later reopened but traffic was delayed until after midnight.

"It was an unfortunate but unexpected end to the bank holiday," said a Highways Agency spokesman.
