Version 0 of 1.

A major inquiry has been launched after a large haul of weapons and ammunition was recovered from a river over the weekend.

Grampian Police said they were alerted after an angler spotted the weapons on the River North Esk on Friday.

Specialist divers and firearms officers were involved in the recovery, near the village of St Cyrus.

Most of the weapons date back to World War I and World War II and may have come from a dumped collection.

The find was made between the North Water Bridge and the old railway viaduct near St Cyrus, just inside the Grampian Police boundary.

Detectives said a "considerable quantity" of different types of weapons were found and they were keeping an open mind on the find.

Anyone with information was asked to contact police.
