A British soldier has died after being shot while on foot patrol in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has said.

The soldier, from 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, was killed near the town of Sangin in Helmand Province, on Friday.

The soldier's next of kin have been informed, the MoD said.

His death brings the number of British service personnel killed in Afghanistan since operations began in 2001 to 160.

Lt Col Nick Richardson, who is spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: "He was one soldier who was here for one cause - to help the Afghan people.

"This true hero paid the ultimate sacrifice and his memory will live with us forever. We mourn his loss and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very sad time."

No-one else was injured in the incident.
