After days of expenses revelations, the Independent says public reaction is in danger of becoming hysterical.

<a class="inlineText" href="http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/leading-articles/leading-article-the-pursuit-of-mps-is-becoming-a-witchhunt-1689779.html">Its concern stems from an opinion poll</a> showing nearly 80% of voters want independent candidates to stand against MPs who have made unethical claims.

The <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/may/22/how-to-become-an-mp">Guardian offers tips for would-be MPs</a> - such as getting Joanna Lumley or a Gurkha to be your election agent.

But the <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/a8101a94-46f9-11de-923e-00144feabdc0.html?nclick_check=1">Financial Times warns that being an independent carries its own pitfalls</a> - including no hope of office.

Double recession

The <a class="inlineText" href="http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/markets/article6346115.ece">Times reports an ominous prediction from one of the world's most influential economists,</a> who says Britain could face two recessions - one straight after the other.

Yale Professor Robert Shiller fears a W-shaped growth pattern - known as the dreaded double dipper.

Police in south Manchester are searching for <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1186388/4x4-backlash-Owners-100-Chelsea-Tractors-tyres-slashed-environmental-activists.html">a radical group of environmentalists, writes the Daily Mail.</a>

The group are thought to be responsible for attacks, including slashing tyres, on about 100 4x4 vehicles.

'Betrayed'

"Baby P Betrayed" <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2445224/Outrage-at-pitiful-sentences-brfor-abusers-of-Baby-P.html">is the front-page headline in the Sun.</a>

It is furious that the mother of the abused toddler could be released in three years time.

The <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2009/05/22/baby-p-trial-stepfather-jailed-for-life-115875-21379966/">Daily Mirror says justice would not be served</a> if the depraved adults responsible for such an unspeakable crime were let out so early.

But according to the <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/baby-p/5367201/Baby-P-death-mother-and-her-boyfriend-jailed.html">Daily Telegraph, the government is determined</a> that those convicted will be released only when they no longer pose any danger.

Non-woolly sheep

The <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1186786/How-BNP-backers-really-foreign-actors-models.html">Daily Mail analyses the BNP's European election leaflet</a> and finds that all is not as it seems.

The paper reveals three construction workers pictured under the headline "British jobs for British workers" are in fact three Americans from Oregon.

The <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/">Times carries the revelation that more and more farmers are keeping non-woolly sheep.</a>

The recession has caused a slump in wool demand and the price of fleece has fallen to as little as 30p - less than the £1 it costs to shear it off.
