Three badly hurt in M62 pile-up Two dead as lorry hits van on M62
(about 1 hour later)
Three people have been seriously injured in a rush-hour pile-up on the M62 in West Yorkshire. Two people were killed when the van they were travelling in was hit by a lorry on a motorway in West Yorkshire.
The motorway was closed in both directions after the crash involving a mobile crane, a lorry and a van. The lorry was travelling east on the M62 when it crashed through the central barrier, hitting the van and a mobile crane on the opposite carriageway.
Police have shut both carriageways between junction 27 for Gildersome and junction 28 for Tingley, causing severe disruption for motorists. Police said the lorry driver was badly injured and several other people suffered minor injuries.
The lorry involved crashed through the central reservation and ended up partially on the opposite carriageway. A section of the M62 between Leeds and Bradford was closed in both directions causing major disruption to traffic.
Fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene and traffic is being diverted on to the M1 north and M621 westbound. The Highways Agency said the motorway between junction 27 for Gildersome and junction 28 for Tingley was likely to be closed until at least 1400 BST.
