A helicopter from Prestwick and a coastguard team were scrambled, and the crew of Tobermory lifeboat picked up four men, all in their 40s. The coastguard was then contacted by one of those on board who said one man was unconscious with serious head injuries.
The three survivors have been taken to Dunaros Hospital on Mull, and will be questioned later by police. Two others had minor head injuries.
An investigation is under way. A Royal Navy helicopter from Prestwick and a coastguard team were scrambled, and the crew of Tobermory lifeboat picked up four men, all in their 40s.
Rescuers were guided in the dark towards the wreckage by one of the survivors, using a torch.
A doctor pronounced one man dead when he was taken ashore and the three others were taken to hospital on Mull for treatment.
It is understood the men were holidaying in the area.
Police have launched an investigation into the accident.
