At about 1725 BST a man was shot, say police. He was taken by ambulance to Wishaw General Hospital. The station has remained shut for investigations. At about 1725 BST a man was shot. The 21-year-old was taken to Wishaw General Hospital where he is said to be in a serious but stable condition.
Assistant Chief Constable Hamish Cormack, head of community safety at Strathclyde Police, said: "As a force we take the deployment of armed officers very seriously and we are well aware of the potential consequences of dealing with incidents involving firearms. The station has remained closed for investigations.
"In accordance with the national guidelines, an investigation will be conducted by an independent force and in view of this, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage." CCTV footage has been recovered from the site which will be scrutinised Lothian and Borders Police
The Scottish Ambulance Service said it was called to Carfin at about 1730 BST by police and took the man to hospital. In accordance with national guidelines on police shooting incidents, the investigation will be conducted by an independent force and Lothian and Borders Police have been appointed to the case.
A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: "A thorough investigation will concentrate on establishing the full circumstances surrounding this incident, securing relevant information and gathering evidence.
"CCTV footage has been recovered from the site which will be scrutinised. In addition, a forensic examination is taking place."
Officers appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
