Bullet 'found in officer's vest'
(about 1 hour later) | |
Investigators probing the fatal shooting of a man by police in Sussex have found a bullet in a firearms officer's protective vest.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) began an inquiry after Mervyn Tussler, 64, was shot at retirement homes in Fernhurst.
The bullet in the vest would not have come from a police gun, the IPCC said.
It said the bullet probably came from a Colt handgun found at the scene that had been fired four times.
In a statement, the IPCC formally identified Mr Tussler and said that his death on Friday was from a bullet fired from a police weapon.
A post-mortem examination on Saturday found he had a single gunshot wound to his torso, the IPCC added.
The IPCC said further tests were being carried out on the bullet that killed Mr Tussler, the Colt handgun - which was not a police weapon, and the bullet that was found in the vest.
The bullet recovered from the vest was not a type used by police and would not have come from a police weapon, it added.
IPCC Commissioner Mike Franklin said: "I extend my deepest sympathies to Mr Tussler's family at this very difficult time.
Mr Tussler was shot dead at a village retirement complex
"We have put in place two IPCC family liaison managers who are working with the family to ensure that they are kept up-to-date with developments in the investigation.
"I also don't underestimate the effect this must have had on the officers involved. I am assured that Sussex Police are taking the relevant steps to support them."
Mr Tussler was shot at the end of a three-hour stand-off with officers after a woman dialled 999 at about 1120 BST, to report an armed man in Fernhurst.
Ten IPCC investigators assigned to the case spent the weekend conducting house-to-house inquiries in the village.
Hospital stay | |
It is believed that Mr Tussler was upset that his sick wife was facing going into a nursing home.
He had been a carer for his wife, Win, for the past 15 years, according to his close friend and near neighbour, Peter Goodman.
Mrs Tussler had spent the last four weeks in hospital in Guildford, Surrey, suffering from a urinary infection and he had been told she was not well enough to return to their home in Ash Grove.
The couple have two grown-up children.
Mr Tussler had belonged to Headley Park Rifle Club, near Bordon on the Surrey/Hampshire border and held a firearms licence. |
