Heavy rain on Saturday had caused the river to swell and the couple are thought to have been swept downstream by the strong current. Coastguards said the river was in spate after heavy rain in recent days.
Ch Insp Stewart Rorrison, of Strathclyde Police, said an extensive search operation had been in operation involving the police, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, HM Coastguard and RNLI. A police statement said: "At around 10.15am the body of a male, thought to be 33-year-old Darren Greenan, was recovered from the River Garnock near to the site of the initial incident.
He said: "Every agency has had craft in the water from Irvine Harbour to the point where the couple are known to have gone into the water." "Formal identification will take place in due course."
