Broken compass hillwalker rescued

A hillwalker has been found safe and well after spending the night in the Cairngorms after his compass broke. The man called for help on his mobile phone on Saturday evening. Mountain rescue teams along with a helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth combed the area for him but failed to find him before nightfall. A Royal Navy search and rescue helicopter from Prestwick was called in and worked alongside local and military mountain rescue teams. The weather conditions were reported to be extremely poor with low cloud and snow. Rescue experts said compasses can lose their bearings in some parts of the Cairngorms because of a magnetic anomaly. The mountain rescuers spotted tracks left by the man this morning and followed them. |
