The party was in honour of Rita Bovey, from Exmouth, who shared her 100th birthday with the first birthday of her great granddaughter Florence. Florence only just shared the limelight as she was born 10 minutes before midnight on May Day last year. Mrs Bovey, who lives in a home, has two children, seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. "She gets a bit overwhelmed by them and mixes up their names - I have that problem too," said her daughter Jo Woodgate, 62, who is also from Exmouth. Seaside landlady Mrs Bovey's younger sister Freda, 90, was unable to make the trip from her home in Australia, but relatives flew from Hong Kong and Spain. Others travelled from London, Kent and Cambridge to spend the day with the centenarian. Mrs Bovey was "thrilled to bits" when Florence was born on her birthday "We did not think Florence was going to be born on the same day as mum," Mrs Woodgate said. "She was finally born at 11.50pm on 1 May last year - so with just a few minutes to spare, she just made it. "Mum was absolutely delighted that Florence was born on the same day as she was. She was thrilled to bits." Mrs Bovey, who received a telegram from the Queen, used to run a popular boarding house in the seaside resort. |
