It happened on Fahan Street in the Bogside area at about 0100 BST on Sunday. Station commander Paul Coyle said a number of youths blocked the road, preventing the crew from getting to their destination. He said because of recent attacks in the area, the crew remained some distance from the gang but then the vehicle was attacked. "Because of the recent history in the Bogside and the attacks that we have been subjected to, the crew didn't really want to antagonise those that were blocking the road so they held back 30 or 40 feet away from them," he said. "At that point the youths then approached the fire engine and when they came within striking distance they had basically thrown a bottle at the windscreen of the fire engine and it broke on impact." On Friday, two members of an ambulance crew were attacked in the city. A paramedic injured in his arm in the incident in Florence Street in the Waterside area. |
