Police have said they are treating an incident in Barrhead near Paisley on Saturday night where a pedestrian was hit by a car as attempted murder.

Strathclyde officers said a man was walking with friends on Paisley Road near to the railway station, when a car mounted the pavement and struck him.

The 18-year-old victim suffered severe injuries to his legs and was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

The incident involving a black Vauxhall Corsa happened about 2210 BST.

Police said the car then drove off in the direction of Grahamston Road.

Det Sgt Garry Miller from Pollok CID said: "A young man has been badly injured and I'm keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time.

"We will be checking any CCTV images and carrying out further enquiries but I would appeal to anyone who may have information about the incident or about the driver of the car to contact us as a matter of urgency."

Police are treating the incident as attempted murder.
