There are reports that the soldier may have been killed by friendly fire. The Israeli army is investigating. The clash took place in the village of Bir Zeit, near Ramallah, when Israelis forces went in to arrest Palestinians they said were wanted. Earlier in the West Bank, Israeli troops shot dead an unarmed Palestinian at the entrance to the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron. The site is holy to Muslims and Jews. The military said the Palestinian ignored several warnings to stop and tried to avoid a security check. Israeli press reports say the Israeli army arrested 16 Palestinians in various overnight operations across the West Bank. Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967, settling about 430,000 Jews in the area, including East Jerusalem. Parts of the West Bank are administered by the Palestinian Authority led by Mahmoud Abbas. |
