A 26-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital for treatment for burns after a gas canister exploded at a camp site.

The woman, from Birkenhead on the Wirral, was burned on her arms, face and lips in the incident on Shell Island in Gwynedd.

North Wales Fire Service said she was trying to change the butane gas camping stove canister when it exploded.

The woman held onto the canister to avoid her children getting injured and her hair and clothes caught fire.

According to the fire service, the heat from the cooking appeared to have caused the explosion.

The woman was able to put out the flames and the area was damped down by firefighters from Harlech.

The injured woman was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.

Jane Honey from North Wales Fire Service said: "This incident clearly highlights the importance of treating gas canisters with great care, especially when cooking.

"You should always read the manufacturers' instructions fully, and be aware of the steps to be taken to change and handle canisters safely.

"With the weather getting warmer and people considering a camping trip away, either in a tent or a camper van, we would strongly urge everyone to take extra care. "
