Plans to axe cleaning jobs on London Underground (LU) could lead to strikes, a leading union has warned.

The Transport and Workers Union (T&G) said it would do everything it could to prevent planned job cuts.

Nearly 200 workers employed by Tube Lines contractor ISS face job cuts. Tube Lines said it was "refocusing resources" for station cleaning.

Earlier London Mayor Ken Livingstone said the company had "no reason" to cut jobs as the company was profitable.

The job cuts would affect cleaners working on the Northern, Piccadilly and Jubilee Lines.

Tom Chinnery from T&G said: "We will do everything we can to oppose these cuts, including calling on London Underground to change the way it assesses cleaning standards."

He added the job cuts were "motivated by greed" on the part of the maintenance firm.
