Charles Howell III took a one-shot lead in the Sony Open after a five-under par third round of 65 took him to 13 under for the tournament.

Howell fired seven birdies, including at the last two holes, to lead England's Luke Donald by a stroke.

Donald, who hit a 69, is alone in second, with halfway leader Paul Goydos another stroke back after carding 70.

Sixteen-year-old Tadd Fujikawa continued his fairytale run with a 66 to sit only six shots off the lead.

Fujikawa lies eighth, two shots behind Ted Purdy (66) and Steve Stricker (67), and one shot behind Paul Azinger (68) and Jim Furyk (69).

I'm going to play my own game, and hopefully that's good enough Luke Donald

Howell has only one PGA Tour victory to his name, but he has finished as runner-up eight times.

"I couldn't really ask for much more than to play in the last group on Sunday," said Howell.

"The biggest enemy in this game is thinking ahead, whether it be good, bad or indifferent. It's a challenge to block that out.

"It's probably positive the golf course is playing difficult with the wind, because it forced me to focus on each shot at hand."

Donald said: "I've only won twice myself, so it's not like I have an abundance of wins.

"I'm not going out to watch him (Howell) play. I'm going to play my own game, and hopefully that's good enough.

"It was a bit of a slow start today but three under on the last 10 holes was satisfactory. I feel like my swing is back on track."
