Deborah Glass, the IPCC's deputy chair, said the decision to investigate the complaint was made on 24 April.
The IPCC's announcement of the probe followed a meeting with the complainant earlier on Thursday.
"Having reviewed the information, the IPCC has taken the decision to independently investigate this latest incident arising from the policing operation relating to the G20 Summit," she added.
"The IPCC is also liaising with HMIC on their review of the policing of public protests, as the complaints we receive about police tactics may help to inform that review."
An IPCC spokesman said the 256 complaints received by the watchdog in relation to the G20 protests included 121 from people who claim to have either witnessed or suffered police violence.
Complaints about police tactics accounted for 75 and 60 were from members of the public who objected to what they saw on television.
