An Edinburgh man has been charged with murdering a woman whose head and bones were found in a bag in the capital.

The remains of Heather Stacey, 44, were found in a Ikea bag near a footpath at Hawthorndale, Newhaven, on Hogmanay.

Alan Cameron, 54, was charged with attempt to defeat the ends of justice and breach of the peace in January.

On Wednesday he appeared on petition at Edinburgh Sheriff Court charged with murdering Ms Stacey between 29 November and 11 December 2007.

He appeared in private before Sheriff Graeme Warner, made no plea, and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance.

Ms Stacey's body was so badly decomposed she had to be identified using DNA.

The case has been continued for further examination.
