Services affected A statement from London Underground said services between East Ham and Dagenham on the District Line were suspended in both directions at about on Friday night following the incident.
Security staff called the police when they spotted the men spraying graffiti. LU added that services were resumed at 0800 GMT on Saturday.
But police said officers did not chase people in such circumstances because of the dangers from trains and electrified equipment.
A BTP spokesman said: "They were noticed by security, who called out to them.
"Then they ran off and two ran right out in front of an oncoming train."
A statement from London Underground said services between East Ham and Dagenham on the District Line were suspended in both directions at about 2310GMT on Friday night following the incident.
LU added that services were resumed at 0800GMT on Saturday.
