Teenage girl suffers severe burns Girl dies after 'suspicious' fire
(about 6 hours later)
Police believe a fire in Arbroath which left a teenage girl with "life-threatening" injuries may have been started deliberately. A teenage girl has died in hospital after suffering severe burns in a "suspicious" fire at a flat in Angus.
The 17-year-old was taken to Ninewells Hospital with severe burns after the blaze which caused extensive damage to a flat in Bloomfield Road at 0430 BST. The 17-year-old, who has not been named, died hours after the blaze in Arbroath at about 0430 BST.
A 17-year-old male, who was also in the ground floor flat, suffered minor injuries. Police said the fire in the town's Bloomfield Road was being treated as suspicious and launched a joint investigation with the fire service.
Tayside Police said they were treating the incident as "suspicious". A teenage boy, also aged 17, was taken from the ground floor premises with superficial injuries.
The block of flats was evacuated to allow police investigations to be carried out. He was treated at hospital and later released.
Det Insp Iain Wales, who is in charge of the investigation, said: ''Enquiries are at an early stage but this is clearly a serious incident. Firefighters put out the blaze soon after it was reported but the flat has been extensively damaged.
"We are aware of a disturbance occurring in nearby Newton Avenue a short time before the fire and we are looking at this as part of our investigation. A disturbance in a nearby street is being linked by police to the fire, which forced the evacuation of the block.
"As such I would appeal to anyone who was in the area during Friday night into Saturday morning who may have information that could assist enquiries to call Tayside Police immediately.'' Officers have cordoned off the area to carry out an investigation.
