PSNI scenes of crime officers have been examining a 100-metre stretch of footpath, close to the junction with the Springfield and Whiterock roads.
Sinn Fein's Janice Austin said people in the area were shocked.
"He (the victim) seems to be very well known in the area. The community is very annoyed that a young person on a night out was attacked," she said.
The young man is said to be critically ill but stable.
