Call for new deal on green issues Assembly green progress 'dismal'
(about 10 hours later)
Green Party delegates will be asked to back a "new deal" to tackle job losses, fuel poverty and climate change at their annual conference in Belfast. Sammy Wilson's sceptical views on climate change are incompatible with his role as environment minister, Green Party MLA Brian Wilson has said.
The motion will also urge the executive to investigate the feasibility of a "green bonds" scheme to invest in public transport and renewable energy. Mr Wilson told the party's annual conference in Belfast the assembly's progress on green issues was dismal.
Irish Environment Minister John Gormley and Green Party MLA Brian Wilson will be among the speakers on Saturday. "In fact, it would seem to be stuck in reverse gear," he said.
Delegates will be asked to back the extension of the UK Hunting Act to NI. The Green Party MLA said the minister's dropping of a government "Act on CO2" advertisement had made Northern Ireland look ridiculous throughout the world.
Also addressing the conference was Mr Wilson's Republic of Ireland ministerial counterpart, John Gormley, who said Northern Ireland had abundant renewable, and especially wind and marine, energy supplies.
"With the right political, business, union and environmental leadership and partnership, it could become a green economy leader," he said.
