Former football goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar has left ITV1's Hell's Kitchen to be reunited with his wife.

The 51-year-old said he had also been affected by the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

Grobbelaar was in goal for Liverpool when 96 football fans died in a stadium crush in Sheffield on 15 April 1989.

After quitting the show, Grobbelaar said: "My wife was sitting outside [the kitchen] eating. That was the defining moment. I knew my prize was outside."

'No regrets'

He said chef Marco Pierre White and the ITV team had been "very graceful" by holding a period of silence to mark the Hillsborough tragedy.

Grobbelaar said: "I've got no regrets. I don't have regrets. I've got a lot of respect for Marco. My respect for him has gone through the roof.

"He is the finest chef I have had the privilege to be in company with."

Grobbelaar had been the bookmakers' favourite to win the show, closely followed by comic actor Adrian Edmondson.

As Grobbelaar left, White said: "You've made my job easy for the last eight days. You walk out of Hell's Kitchen a winner, Bruce. It hurts me, it saddens me to see you go."
