The number of mortgages granted for house purchases rose to 24,300 in February, up by 4% compared with January, says the Council of Mortgage lenders, yet lending remains low compared to the average February total of 76,000 loans between 2002 and 2007. Gross mortgage lending rose from £9.9 billion in February to £11.5 billion in March say the Council of Mortgage Lenders, a 16% increase. Yet lending is 52% lower than March 2008.
