South African shebeens - drinking dens in residential areas - are under threat in theWestern Cape province, as the authorities try to crack down on the thousands of barsoperating without licences, saying they breed crime.

The BBC visited Makati's Paradise shebeen in Gugulethu township, to gauge the views of owner Dennis Makati and his customers, and witnessed the arrival of the police.
