Firefighters had to saw off part of a plank stuck to a young girl's head by a protruding nail to allow her to enter an ambulance and be taken to hospital.

The 11-year-old was building a shelter with friends, in Pumpherston, West Lothian, when a 7ft plank fell on her, embedding the nail in her skull.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said she was conscious while the plank was sawed down to fit in the ambulance.

Her condition, at Edinburgh's Royal Hospital for Sick Children, is unknown.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said: "She couldn't fit into the ambulance with a 7ft length of wood on her head.

"We cut the length of wood in order for her to get into the ambulance."
