Ch Insp Haydn Roberts, of GMP's traffic division, said: "Tragically a young boy has died as a result of the collision. A Subaru was later found on Canal Street, Stockport, and a 23-year-old man arrested on suspicion of theft and burglary.
"I am eager to speak to anyone who knows of the whereabouts of the Subaru or who has any information about who may have been in the car last night." Officers are trying to establish whether the recovered Subaru is the one that failed to stop before the fatal crash.
Clark Way was shut at its junction with Mottram Road and junction three westbound of the M67 was also closed for accident investigations.
