New pirate attack against US ship Pirates attack second US vessel
(30 minutes later)
Pirates failed to seize a US cargo ship off the coast of Somalia, in the latest of a spate of attacks in the area. Pirates have used rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons to attack another US merchant ship off the coast of Somalia.
The pirates fired rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons at the Liberty Sun but were not able to board. The pirates damaged the Liberty Sun, which was carrying a cargo of food aid, but were not able to board it.
It was a narrow escape, again proving the defiance and danger posed by pirates off the Somali coast, says the BBC's Jonathan Beale in Washington. The ship asked for assistance from the US warship which was involved in the rescue of a US captain seized by pirates last week.
The US has vowed to quell piracy, but over the past two days four vessels have been successfully seized. Capt Richard Phillips is due to fly back to the US from Kenya later.
The fresh attacks also come in the wake of the liberation of a US skipper in operations that left three bandits dead on Sunday. The BBC's Jonathan Beale in Washington says the latest attack shows the defiance and danger posed by pirates off the Somali coast.
Captain Richard Phillips, who was rescued after five days in captivity, is due to fly back to the US from Mombasa, Kenya, later on Wednesday. Despite renewed US calls to quell piracy, four more vessels have been successfully seized over the past two days.
The operation to free Capt Phillips, who was held captive in a lifeboat for five days, left three pirates dead on Sunday.
