A man delivered his baby daughter on the hard shoulder of a West Midlands motorway after his wife went into labour in the early hours.

The couple, from Bilston, were between junctions five and six of the M42 near Solihull on Easter Sunday when the woman got cramps.

Her husband delivered the baby with the help of an ambulance phone operator.

The woman, who is in her 30s, had been due to give birth a week later, an ambulance service spokesman said.

The spokesman said the couple had been driving home from London at the time.

An ambulance crew took mother and baby to hospital after the delivery, where both are said to be doing well.
