Blast-hit pie factory to reopen

A pie factory damaged in a fatal explosion in Huddersfield should resume production this week, bosses said.

David Cole, 37, from the Salterhebble area of Halifax, died when the blast at Andrew Jones Pies brought down part of the roof and started a fire on Friday.

Another man, named locally as Marcus Cartwright, 23, was badly hurt.

Sales manager Graham Easby said all 30 staff were being called to a meeting on Tuesday with a view to resuming production by the weekend.

He said the decision would depend on a number of issues, including whether the Health and Safety Executive had completed their investigations into the cause of the explosion and subsequent fire.

'Working guy'

Offering the sympathies of the entire work force to the family of Mr Cole, Mr Easby said: "He was a working guy who went to work and is not going home.

"I don't know how you deal with that."

The cause of the explosion appears to have been gas-related and is not being treated as suspicious.

Andrew Jones, an award-winning pie maker with a million-pound annual turnover, supplies butchers, farm shops, sandwich shops and other retailers.
