Gorillas at a Kent wildlife park have been given a special seasonal treat.

Keepers at Howletts Wild Animal Park near Canterbury gave Western Lowland gorilla Kifu a giant papier-mache egg filled with seeds, nuts and fruit.

The treat soon disappeared as Kifu, who is father to eight, was joined in his feast by his large family.

Howletts and sister park Port Lympne, both run by the Aspinall Foundation, are home to 74 gorillas, thought to be the largest collection in captivity.

The Aspinall Foundation works with a rescue and rehabilitation scheme in the Congo and Gabon to return gorillas bred in captivity to safe areas in their native homelands.

It is estimated that between 50,000 and 100,000 Western Lowland gorillas survive in the wild but their numbers of have fallen dramatically due to the impact of deforestation and the Ebola virus.
