A man and a woman have been killed in a crash on the M6 motorway in Cheshire. A man and a woman in their 80s have been killed in a crash on the M6 motorway in Cheshire.
The crash, on the southbound carriageway between junctions 21 and 20 near Warrington at about 2100 BST on Tuesday, involved two vehicles. The pair, from Hawarden, Flintshire, were pronounced dead at the scene between junctions 20 and 21 at about 2112 BST on Tuesday.
No one else was injured in the accident, Cheshire police have confirmed. Cheshire Police said a 61-year-old woman from the Knutsford area was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
A woman from the Warrington area has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The motorway has since been re-opened. The motorway was closed for six hours before reopening at 0300 BST Wednesday.
The crash involved three vehicles, a Mitsubishi Space driven by the 61-year-old woman, a silver Peugeot Partner van in which the two people died and a black BMW 525 driven by a 51-year-old man from Lanarkshire.
The driver of the Mitsubishi was not seriously injured and is in police custody.
The BMW driver was taken to Warrington District General Hospital with chest pains.
