Models from scandalous NAKED high-rise photoshoot in Dubai to be deported, authorities say Group of models from scandalous NAKED high-rise photoshoot in Dubai will avoid prison & be deported from UAE, authorities say
(about 13 hours later)
More than a dozen models and the organizer of the naked photoshoot that angered the Dubai authorities won’t get six-month prison terms after all, as the Muslim emirate has decided to deport them instead. A group of models who were photographed naked on a balcony in Dubai will be deported from the UAE after authorities opted not to send them to prison. They were facing six months behind bars under the country's lewd behavior laws.
The investigation into “the recently publicized photo shoot, which contravened UAE law” has been completed, the Dubai Media Office announced in a tweet on Tuesday. On Sunday evening, a video of more than a dozen women posing in the nude went viral on social media when a resident of a Dubai skyscraper filmed the group from another building in the posh Marina neighborhood.
“The individuals involved will be deported from the United Arab Emirates. No further comment shall be made on the matter,” it said. Shortly after, the local police department revealed on Twitter that they had all been arrested for lewd actions and debauchery, and were facing a six-month jail term or a fine of 5000 dirhams ($1,300).
More than a dozen young women and the organizer have been detained after staging a nude photoshoot in broad daylight on the balcony of a high-rise building in Dubai’s posh Marina neighborhood on Sunday. The models were from the former Soviet Union countries. The only Russian in the affair was the organizer, according to some media reports, while others identified him as a Ukrainian. "Dubai Police warns against such unacceptable behaviors which do not reflect the values and ethics of Emirati society," the police said.
The police acted after a video of the stunt, which was staged during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, went viral on the internet. It was filmed and uploaded online by a stunned resident of a nearby building. He was also detained. A few days later, the Dubai government's media office revealed that the girls would be spared prison, and would simply be deported from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The authorities pointed out that the behavior of those behind the naked photoshoot was “unacceptable” and contradicted “the values and ethics of Emirati society." While the full list of the group's nationality hasn't been released, statements from diplomats in the country suggest that 12 of the arrested girls were from Ukraine, with the photographer coming from Russia. Previously, online outlets reported that the entire group came from former Soviet Union nations, including Belarus and Moldova.
The UAE penal codes derive many elements from Islam’s strict Sharia law, with the police warning that lewd actions and debauchery could be punished by a six-month jail term or a fine of 5,000 dirhams ($1,300). Dubai, a city in the UAE, has a strict legal system based on Sharia Law, derived from the religious precepts of Islam.
