Heather Wheeler, leader of South Derbyshire District Council, said it was important for the wider economy that the posts were kept.
"They have taken a very pragmatic view. The most important thing is that they are keeping their jobs.
"We have a very strong local economy but everyone can see how things are changing across the country.
"It is very good that we have 27% of our local GDP in manufacturing and engineering but we don't want to lose those fantastic jobs."
Management at the factory declined to comment about the situation.
