An alleged suicide bomber has targeted a church in the Indonesian city of Makassar as worshippers were leaving after a Sunday service. There have been reports of injuries as the result of the explosion. A bomb went off outside a Catholic church in the Indonesian city of Makassar during Sunday service. Police believe it was a suicide attack.
The explosion went off at the Makassar Cathedral Church on Sunday morning as the people who flocked to the church to attend the service were on their way out, a pastor at the church was quoted by the local media as saying.
"We were finishing the service and people were going home when it happened,” the pastor reportedly told Indonesia’s Metro TV broadcaster. The moment of the blast was caught on a CCTV camera.
Photos and videos have emerged in the aftermath of the explosion, showing debris scattered outside the church. Local media reported that several cars have been damaged. A video from the scene shows debris scattered near the gate at the building’s main entrance.
Police believe a suicide bomber is behind the blast.
So far, there have not been reports on casualties, with the pastor saying that some 10 people have suffered injuries from the explosion. According to the pastor, one of the worshippers spotted the would-be bomber and attempted to stop him from entering the building. Indonesian media quoted the South Sulawesi Regional Police spokesperson, Kombes E. Zulfan, who described the explosion as a suicide bombing.
National police spokesperson Argo Yuwono later told reporters that two suspected perpetrators were riding a motorbike as they tried to enter the church. He added that a vehicle that was destroyed and human remains were found at the scene. Overall, 14 people were hospitalized, according to Yuwono.
