An Essex teenager has been jailed for life after being convicted of battering his father to death with a hammer and crowbar and trying to kill his mother. Edward Belben, who was 15 at the time, killed his father Gary, 59, at their Colchester home while suffering depression. He killed his father with a series of blows to his head before attempting to murder his mother Tanya, now 45. Mr Justice Tugendhat said he must serve a minimum of 18 years. "Your mother and your sister and brother have been deeply traumatised and it must be doubtful if they will ever recover," the judge told him at Chelmsford Crown Court. Belben, now 17, denied the offences committed in December 2007 and claimed his personality was changed after taking the anti-depressant drug Prozac. The court was told he committed the offences while in a violent rage but his mother fought him off and Belben fled the family home covered in blood. |
