Carthage Police Department Chief Chris McKenzie said that the shooter was an "adult male". A 45-year-old man is under arrest, and will be charged with eight murders, a local district attorney said.
Mr McKenzie said: "At the Pinelake Rehabilitation Center this morning we did have an individual that did injure six that right now we have confirmed as fatalities. "At this time the suspect, Robert Stewart, is in custody facing these eight counts of murder, felony assault on a law enforcement officer, and other charges are pending at this time," said Maureen Krueger, Moore County district attorney.
"We have potentially two others injured at the hospital and a law enforcement officer injured as well." The man is not believed to be related to any of the residents at the home.
He said the injured police officer was "fine". Seven residents and one nurse were among the fatalities.
Unconfirmed local reports say the shooting may have been the result of a domestic dispute.
The suspect was taken to hospital and Mr McKenzie said police hoped to question him in due course as to his motive for the shooting.

The BBC's Jon Donnison in Washington says the shooting will no doubt once again reignite the debate about gun laws in the United States.
