Egyptian officials have called off the search for four scuba divers missing in the Red Sea since Saturday.

The divers - two Russians, a Dutchman and an Egyptian guide - were exploring a coral reef off Marsa Alam resort when they were separated from their boat.

The alarm was raised after a fellow diver managed to swim ashore.

A helicopter and 15 boats have been searching the area for four days, but an official said they did not expect to find survivors now.

"I am sorry to say there is no chance to find them alive," Alaa El Din Abdelgeleel of the Red Sea Association for Diving and Marine Sport said. "We are limiting the search to the coastal areas, looking for their bodies."

He said there had been high waves in the area and the divers did not have lights or whistles that would have helped rescuers find them.

The Red Sea's coral reefs and numerous sharks are popular with divers from around the world.
