Head teacher Ann Addison said his mother Chris was a teaching assistant at the school. His mother Chris told BBC News her son suffered from myotonic dystrophy, a muscular condition which can lead to abnormal heart rhythm.
She said the school was reeling from the shock of Sam's death and described him as a "gentle, caring boy." He had been due for a check-up with doctors next month, she said.
