Florist hails blooming good news

York Florist Malcolm Pepper has persuaded York Council to postpone major road works outside his shop until after Mothering Sunday on 22 March. He told them it was the busiest time of the year and would hit his business badly, so they rearranged the work. Richard White, of the council, said: "He made a good point and we changed the scheme. The last thing you want is the road closed at such a busy time." Mr Pepper, who runs Secret Garden florists in Bishopthorpe Road with his wife Kate, appealed to his MP and city councillors when he heard about the plan, and was delighted when the call did not fall on stony ground. "Every business day is important in this recession," he said, "but Mothers' Day is the busiest time of the year for us and the most important. "We are very pleased with the council's decision."
