First Group said in a statement: "Peter was a gentleman and nothing was ever too much trouble for him.
"He always had a smile on his face and loved to laugh and joke with his colleagues. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him."
Bob Hamilton, managing director at First in South Yorkshire, said: "This was a tragic incident and my deepest sympathies go out to Peter's family.
"The whole of our company has been left shocked and saddened by what happened on Friday.
"I would particularly like to praise those employees who, along with the emergency services, acted extremely professionally to deal with the immediate after effects of the collision."
