Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has announced his return to politics after an absence of six years.

Mr Barak, 64, says he will contest the leadership of the Labour Party, a main partner in Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's governing coalition, in May polls.

Mr Barak became prime minister in 1999, embarking on an ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful peace plan with the Palestinians.

He was roundly defeated by Ariel Sharon in the February 2001 polls.

Mr Barak announced his decision to run for the Labour leadership - which would likely bring with it the defence portfolio - in a letter to his party.

"The state of Israel, the army and the security establishment are experiencing a major shake-up," he wrote.

"I believe that I possess the capabilities and talents necessary to serve as Israel's next defence minister."

Current Labour leader Amir Peretz has seen his popularity plunge following Israel's summer conflict with Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon.

Mr Barak is a former military chief and Israel's most decorated soldier.
