Version 0 of 1.

Blackburn's lethal streak in front of goal helped them brush aside Everton in the third round of the FA Cup.

Matt Derbyshire put the visitors ahead from a yard out after keeper Tim Howard parried a Morten Gamst Pedersen strike.

Everton had two penalty appeals waved away before Pedersen struck with a free-kick and Paul Gallagher chested down the ball and lashed in a shot.

Andy Johnson did score from the spot for Everton but Benni McCarthy added Blackburn's fourth to seal the win.

Rovers boss Mark Hughes had made wholesale changes, with six players coming into the side.

Young striker Derbyshire was promoted to the starting ranks and he quickly made his mark as he pounced to add to his New Year's Day strike as substitute against Wigan.

The goal opened up the game at Goodison Park as Everton attacked with urgency and determination and were angry when they were denied a penalty for a perceived handball.

But they had only themselves to blame when Mikel Arteta ballooned a shot high from Johnson's pull-back as they failed to make the most of promising situations.

Pedersen curls in from 25-yards for Blackburn's second

Arteta went down over a Pedersen foot but the referee again refused to award a penalty to Everton.

Pedersen was proving a nuisance to the home side and the Norwegian emphasised this when he curled in a 25-yard free-kick past a despairing Howard.

Everton upped the tempo and Victor Anichebe saw a deflected shot go agonisingly wide but the Toffees soon found themselves 3-0 down after 38 minutes.

Gallagher excellently chested down a David Bentley pass, swivelled and turned inside defender Joseph Yobo before beating Howard with a left-foot strike.

Everton were booed off at half-time but, to their credit, they did continue to push forward after the break in search of mounting an unlikely comeback as Blackburn sat back and protected their lead.

Johnson's looped shot was tipped over the bar by Rovers keeper Brad Friedel and Yobo headed wide before Aaron Mokoena conceded a penalty when bringing down Arteta.

Johnson sidefooted past Friedel from the spot-kick but that was as good as it got for Everton as McCarthy made himself some space and shot home in injury time to complete the Merseysiders' misery.

Blackburn boss Mark Hughes:"People looking at the teamsheet may have thought I was taking this game lightly.

"That wasn't the case and I knew if we played to our potential the team that I put out had a real chance to win.

"To score as many goals as we did and play as well as we did I think that is great credit to the players."

Everton boss David Moyes:"It wasn't our day. We didn't start well enough. Everything we did didn't go in and everything they did went in. They hit the target and we didn't.

"I think there was a penalty we could have got but that wasn't the reason why we didn't get a result so we are not going to harp on about that.

"I thought the team were terrific in the second half and one goal was scant reward for how hard we worked."
