The chief reporter of the Stuttgart Journal newspaper, Kevin Latzel, told the BBC that there was a lot of confusion at the scene of the shooting. It said that he fled there in a car after the school shooting and barricaded himself in a supermarket.
There he shot dead two passers-by and two police officers were injured.
In total, nine students, three teachers and three passers-by are thought to be among the dead.
