Renowned South Korean filmmaker Kim Ki-duk has passed away at 59 from Covid-19 complications while visiting Latvia, local media report. Renowned South Korean filmmaker Kim Ki-duk has passed away at 59 from Covid-19 complications while visiting Latvia.
Kim had reportedly arrived in Latvia to buy a house in the Baltic country, but later failed to show up for a scheduled meeting, Latvian news website Delfi said.   Kim’s family confirmed to South Korean media that he passed away on Friday.
Russian documentary film director Vitaly Mansky told the website that Kim had passed away as a result of Covid-19 complications at 1:20am local time on Friday. Mansky said Kim’s death was confirmed to him by interpreter.  The director had reportedly arrived in Latvia to buy a house in the Baltic country, but later failed to show up for a scheduled meeting, Latvian news website Delfi said. 
The South Korean Embassy in Latvia, meanwhile, told Delfi that it could not comment on the reports of Kim's death for the time being. Russian documentary film director Vitaly Mansky told the website that Kim had passed away as a result of Covid-19 complications at 1:20am local time.
DETAILS TO FOLLOW Kim was the only South Korean director to win awards at all three major European film festivals: Cannes, Venice, and Berlin.
His film ‘Pieta’, a drama about a debt collector, earned him a Golden Lion in Venice in 2012.
