Fatal city crash referred to IPCC Teenager charged over fatal crash
(1 day later)
Police say a car crash in Plymouth in which two teenage girls were killed has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). A 17-year-old man has been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving after two girls, aged 13 and 17, were killed in a crash.
Officers say the IPCC was informed because the driver of the Vauxhall Nova failed to stop for police. A Vauxhall Nova overturned and split in two in the accident on Gdynia Way in Plymouth on Friday night.
The car overturned and split in two during the crash on Gdynia Way, one of the main routes into the city. Police say the crash has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) because the car failed to stop for police.
A 17-year-old man and an 18-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. An 18-year-old who was being questioned has been released without charge.
'Mandatory requirement' The 17-year-old has also been charged with driving while disqualified and driving without insurance and will appear before Plymouth Magistrates on Monday.
The female passengers were taken to Derriford Hospital, where they both later died of their injuries. Following the crash the injured girls were taken to Derriford Hospital, where they both later died of their injuries.
The four teenagers were in the green Vauxhall Nova on Friday night when a marked police car tried to stop the vehicle in Plym Street shortly before the collision. The driver and passenger of a second vehicle involved in the incident - a silver Citroen - received non-life threatening injuries.
In a statement Devon and Cornwall Police said: "This fail to stop is deemed as a police contact and it is a mandatory requirement for the police to inform the IPCC of any police contact prior to a fatal road traffic collision."
It has emerged following the crash that the car is believed to have been stolen.
The closure of Gydnia Way caused major disruption to traffic into the city from Plymstock and the South Hams. The road is due to reopen on Saturday evening.
