Ch Con Matt Baggott, from Leicestershire Police, said: "The death of a colleague is a terrible shock and our thoughts are with her family and friends. Ch Supt Chris Rollings of Leicestershire Police paid tribute to the officer involved.
"Everything possible is being, and will continue to be, done to ensure her family and colleagues receive the support they need at this difficult time." "The death of a serving police officer is clearly an extremely tragic event," said Mr Rollings.
"The officer concerned was hard-working, popular and will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues at this time. The loss of this officer will be felt by all."
The probationary officer was six months away from graduating to full police officer status.
She had not worked since before Christmas and was due back on the beat next week, Mr Rollings said.
