A 17-year-old male youth has been charged with the murder of a 58-year-old woman who was found dead at her home in Caerphilly, south Wales. A 17-year-old youth has been remanded in custody, charged with murdering a midwife at her home.
He is due to appear before Caerphilly magistrates on Monday. Susan Williams, 58, who had worked in the Rhymnney valley for 30 years, was found dead at her home in Caerphilly last Friday morning.
A 40-year-old man arrested in connection with Susan Williams' death has been released on police bail. Her family said the grandmother, who was also a senior sister at the Parklands care home in Bedwas, was a "true carer" in the community.
A 23-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and witness intimidation has also been released on bail, Gwent Police said. The teenager will appear again before Cwmbran youth court on Tuesday.
He had appeared before Caerphilly magistrates.
In a statement released through Gwent Police, her family said that during her time as a midwife in the maternity department of the Caerphilly Miners Hospital and as a district midwife, Ms Williams had witnessed "with pride and satisfaction" some of the babies she delivered becoming parents themselves. They said many had remained friends with her "until her life was taken from her".
The statement also said she was "much-loved" among fellow staff members and residents at the Bedwas home where she cared for the elderly and infirm.
"She was a naturally kind and caring person, a mother and grandmother who would not hesitate to help anyone in distress, be it a friend or a stranger," said her family.
"The community has lost a true carer and she will be sadly missed.
"Her family wish to thank everyone for their help and support at this very difficult time."
The 17-year-old, who cannot be identified, was remanded in custody following a brief hearing at Caerphilly magistrates' court on Monday.
Magistrates chairwoman Gillian Rogers adjourned the case until Tuesday when the defendant will appear before Cwmbran Youth Court.
As part of the murder investigation Gwent Police also arrested a 40-year-old man in connection with the death and a 23-year-old woman on suspicion of assisting an offender and witness intimidation.
Both have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
